My name is Gaby and I’m here to share my thoughts and experiences of working with PHD Marketing, and how this provided me with the opportunity to explore a new industry, meet new people, and take on new tasks and challenges.
I suppose I will start by answering the question “Why did I choose marketing for my work experience?”
As a current year 12 student, studying English, Geography and Business A-levels, I have always taken a particular interest in learning about what goes on behind the scenes to make the products that we as consumers see and buy today. I wanted to take this opportunity to expand my knowledge on the world of B2B marketing, and the different types of clients that businesses like PHD will work with.
Entering this week, I remained somewhat uncertain about the career path I desired, but after my insightful 5 days here, I know that marketing is definitely something I want to incorporate into my degree, and I hope by writing this blog I can inspire like-minded individuals to look deeper into this career path.
This leads me to my next question: “Was this week what I expected?”
Before coming into this week, I was still unsure of what to expect due to limited insights gathered from online research. As much as this intrigued me and made me excited to learn about what PHD really do, I had apprehensions that the stereotypical notion of an “office job” might not captivate me, but after completing this week, I can ensure you that this wasn’t the case. From the moment I stepped foot into the PHD Marketing office, I was greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere, enabling me to expand my skill set and enrich my marketing knowledge.
PHD embraced the importance of diverse experiences and provided me with a range of projects to work on, executed with a detailed timetable for the week. From developing social media posts to detailed graphics, I was able to witness how marketing concepts and strategies come to life in a professional setting. Along with this, every employee at PHD Marketing generously spared their time to provide enlightening talks, offering an in-depth view into the intricacies of their respective roles. These interactions soon became one of the highlights of my week, as they broadened my understanding of their diverse clientele and the specialised work they undertake for each.
Although I expected tasks throughout the week, I didn’t expect this level of involvement in the business. I was entrusted with tasks that allowed me to stretch my abilities and explore different facets of marketing, thereby guiding me in determining the specific area of marketing I wish to pursue in my future studies.
After completing this transformative week at PHD Marketing, I can happily say that I am now set on this subject to incorporate into my degree. I have not only acquired invaluable skills and broadened my knowledge, but I can now confidentially explain what marketing really is and understand the multifaceted components that drive a thriving organisation, much like PHD Marketing itself.
Hi everyone! I’m Isobelle Tolson, I’m 17 years old, and I’m excited to share my work experience journey at PHD Marketing with you. Currently, I’m pursuing A Levels in Business, English Literature, and Physical Education at Silcoates School. When the opportunity arose to explore the world of marketing, I couldn’t resist.
Studying Business has opened my eyes to potential career options and courses to study at university, prompting me to seize the chance to gain practical experience at PHD Marketing. Therefore, when the opportunity to undertake work experience arose, I knew I had to take it. The chance to immerse myself in a professional marketing environment aligned perfectly with my academic pursuits. This week has shown me that marketing is definitely a path I want to pursue in my degree. The experience and insights gained have definitely solidified my passion for the business world.
PHD Marketing is a B2B marketing agency that specialises in developing bespoke communications strategies for businesses in the print, packaging, labels, life sciences, manufacturing, and technology sectors.
Before my first day at PHD, office manager Cath reached out to offer a tour of the office and a chance to meet the team. From the moment I walked into PHD, I felt a sense of excitement and anticipation. The staff’s warm reception and genuine kindness immediately confirmed that I was in for an incredible week. The friendly and welcoming atmosphere at PHD created an instant ease, making me certain that this was the perfect place to embark on my work experience journey. Work experience – those words may sound intimidating to students, evoking feelings of dread. But let me assure you, if you’re considering work experience at PHD, you’re in for a week filled with laughter and a true glimpse into the world of marketing.
During my time at PHD, I have had the chance to tackle a variety of tasks, such as graphic design, social media posts, event planning, and coverage. I have thoroughly enjoyed each task. However, what truly distinguishes PHD Marketing from other places is the genuine commitment they’ve shown towards my week-long experience. Every day, I’ve had the opportunity to personally speak with each member of the team, allowing me to gain insights into their roles and learn from their expertise. I’ve delved into the realms of SEO, agility, teamwork, webinars, copywriting, and learned about the work of various clients.
As someone who doesn’t consider myself particularly artistic, I discovered that graphic design posed the most significant challenge for me during my week. As a consumer, it’s easy to overlook the amount of time and effort invested in creating graphics. Each client has specific requirements, from font preferences to precise colour shades. Thankfully, with the assistance of the Adobe app and guidance from the lovely Natasha, I was able to navigate through it more smoothly, and ended up really enjoying creating graphics. I have really appreciated the support from each team member throughout this week!
Overall, my time at PHD Marketing has been an extremely enjoyable experience. I am grateful for the laughter, support, kindness, and true glimpse into the world of marketing that I have gained during this week. It has confirmed my career aspirations and provided me with the confidence to pursue marketing as a potential path in my future endeavours.
Many thanks, PHD and team!
