PHD’s Rebecca takes on the world's greatest half marathon
The Great North Run attracts more than 55,000 and this year our very own Rebecca Gould will be joining the tens of thousands of runners as they pound the streets of Newcastle.
Rebecca is a keen runner but has has been training hard since she received her confirmation email a few months ago.
PHD’s social media whizz will be running the Great North Run for the Candlelighter’s charity. Founded by families and medical staff over 40 years ago, the charity continues to help support children with cancer and their families.
Rebecca said: “The Candlelighter's team provided me and my family with endless support during my sister’s battle with cancer. This included an organised stay in the house on the hospital site which enabled us to be close to my sister and support for my family throughout. Not to mention, their amazing 'Jolly Trolley', a mobile sweet trolley in the hospital, which my brother and I took much delight in helping with.
We unfortunately lost my sister to the leukemia in 2003 but will remain grateful to Candlelighters for supporting us when we needed it the most.”
The annual half marathon, which is thought to be the second largest for participation in the world, takes place between Newcastle and South Shields on 11 September.
Starting in Newcastle, the course takes in the iconic Tyne Bridge, goes through Gateshead passing the famous international athletics stadium and finishes in the coastal town of South Shields.
Rebecca continued: “I hope that in raising some money from this run more families can receive the same kind of support we received and feel the difference it can make. The charity can organise events, holidays, classes and financial support to families going through a difficult time as well as funding research for leukemia and other cancers.”
